Mark Leonard

Senior Research Associate

Mark Leonard is a former Director of the Foreign Policy Centre and one of Britain's best-known foreign policy thinkers. After founding the FPC in 1998 he wrote and edited some of its most seminal publications on Europe, the future of diplomacy, and world order, including Network Europe and Reordering the World: the Long-Term Implications of September 11.

He has worked on policy and strategy for national governments, inter-governmental organisations and companies and his reports on public diplomacy have fed into the thinking of the UK government, namely the creation of a public diplomacy strategy board in the Foreign Office.

In 2004 Mark received a 5-month "Transatlantic Fellowship" at the German Marshall Fund in Washington DC, which he used to write a book, "Why Europe will run the 21st Century" (Fourth Estate; forthcoming, 2005).

Mark is currently Director at the European Council for Foreign Relations
