Understanding Islamism

A Seminar was held at the Foreign press Association with Dr Hugh Roberts, director of the North Africa Project and chaired by, Rouzbeh Pirouz director of the Civility Programme at the Foreign policy centre.

Reacting to the events of 11 September 2001, many Western observers and policy-makers have tended to lump all forms of Islamism together, branding them as radical and hostile. The West needs a discriminating strategy that takes account of the diversity of outlooks and that understands that the festering Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the war in and occupation of Iraq, as well as the way in which the "war against terrorism" is being waged, significantly strengthen the appeal of the most virulent and dangerous jihadi tendencies.

This seminar followed a major new Crisis Group report on this issue.
