Georgia’s Political Landscape in Focus: A critical point for democracy

The Parliamentary elections held in Georgia in October 2024 were internationally condemned for significant irregularities, intimidation of voters, and suspected interference. In the year that has followed, protestors have taken to the streets to march against the government’s illiberal turn and abandonment of the widely supported EU membership process. In an attempt to silence dissent, the ‘ruling’ Georgian Dream regime has turned to violent and outlaw tactics – including kidnapping protesters, freezing the bank accounts of civil society organisations’ representatives and the imprisonment of journalists, opposition and anyone who dares to protest.
After a year of resistance, Georgia’s democracy has reached a critical inflection point. While the UK and other European leaders have expressed their ‘deep concern’ and ‘downgraded’ their relationships, they do maintain some limited engagement with the ‘Georgian Dream’ regime. For a formerly vital partner to the UK, is the Government doing enough to support efforts to restore Georgian democracy?
This event is an opportunity to hear from Georgian experts on the latest developments and how they are affecting civil society, as well as reflect on what the UK and international community can usefully do to support Georgian society. Chaired by Joe Powell MP, the panel discussion will provide insights relating to key questions, with an opportunity for audience participation.
