About the UK Media Freedom Forum

Media freedom today faces an increasingly complex range of challenges, shaped by the interconnected domestic and global environments. States and other stakeholders play a vital role in addressing these issues, but there is often a gap between their stated commitments and delivery.

This two-day Forum will explore a number of themes impacting media freedom globally including the use of strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs), transnational repressionmisinformation and disinformation, and media literacy. By applying both a local and international lens, the conference will also assess the effectiveness of the UK as well as other States’ involvement with global initiatives, including the 51-State Members of the Media Freedom Coalition (MFC), and engagement at multilateral fora, such as the United Nations, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and Council of Europe (CoE), in advancing concrete protections for media freedom.

Amid growing concern about the challenges of disinformation and foreign interference, and their impact, the conference will not only provide space to evaluate the extent of existing and emerging problems, but also serve as a platform through which journalists, policy makers, academics and civil society organisations can come together and develop concrete policy recommendations for the UK government and other national stakeholders, with the aim of advancing media freedom issues.
