Demographic and economic trends mean that Europe must welcome increased immigration and manage diversity if it is to retain its prosperity and significance in the forthcoming decades. Yet, at a time when opponents of diversity enjoy ill-deserved attention, its supporters often resort to unclear arguments in its favour.
Building on the Centre's previous work on migration and multiculturalism, the Diversity and Inclusion Index will aim to provide objective measures by which EU member-states can be tested on their attitudes to new citizens in terms of rights, the labour market and political participation. By "ranking" states according to their performance in these areas the Index will also provide a tool for NGOs, governments and EU institutions to judge progress towards increased equality across the Union. Outputs will include a series of policy papers and events in Brussels, Paris and London.
