Transnational Communities and Good Governance Promotion

In collaboration with the Migration Policy Group

Diasporas are an important agent in the pursuit of foreign policy objectives. However, most of the research carried out at present focuses on the economic impacts of transnationalism, from the so-called 'brain drain' to the impact on development of remittances sent back by migrants to poorer countries.

This project will chart the potential positive impacts of transnationalism on subjects relating to good governance promotion – from the advancement of democracy, human rights and the rule of law to the building of institutions and the development of civil society. The outputs of the project will include: a programme of small seminars in key countries of origin; a series of short case study papers capturing the lessons from these seminars (including India, Nigeria, Turkey and Morocco), a major conference and a tool-kit aimed at the foreign policy community across Europe. We aim to launch the programme in Spring 2004. Contact: Josephine.osikena@fpc.org.uk
